University of Alaska Southeast Alaska FT224 Shellfish Hatchery & Farming Methods

Introduction to the principles, concepts, and methods used in the production of shellfish seed and microalgae in hatcheries, as well as the techniques used in nurseries and on farms, with an emphasis on those used by Alaskan farmers. The course covers all aspects of hatchery operations, including broodstock conditioning and spawning, microalgae culture, larval rearing and setting, as well as water quality and biosecurity. We also cover basic biology of common species, different culture systems, permitting, seafood processing, and farmer cooperatives. This is a 3-credit online course happening in Spring of 2026.
