Alaska Sea Grant is inviting applications for a three-day Oyster Farm Operations Workshop, to be held on Prince of Wales Island from September 2 to 4, 2025.
The goal of this workshop is to give new and prospective oyster farmers comprehensive training on key topics necessary for the production of high-quality, Alaskan oysters.
The workshop will include visits to numerous farms with different cultivation techniques and will provide ample time for participants to network with and ask questions to existing farmers. Key topics that will be covered include:
-Growout gear, including FlipFarm, OysterGro, rafts, trays, and more
-FLUPSY operation and management
-Biofouling control
-Oyster quality and handling, including various options for tumbling and sorting oysters
-Farm inventory and growth tracking
-Biosecurity
Space is limited to ten individuals and applications are required. Applications are open to all, and priority will be given to Alaskans that are relatively new to shellfish farming or are in the process of starting a farm. Upon acceptance, applicants will be required to submit a $200 deposit to reserve their space. The deposit will be refunded upon successful completion of the course. Travel, room, and board for participants will be covered.
