2025 Oyster Hatchery and Nursery Training

Call for applications

April 16-18, 2025

OceansAlaska Hatchery, Ketchikan, AK

This workshop will take place April 16-18, 2025, at the OceansAlaska Hatchery in Ketchikan, Alaska.

To further production potential and understanding of oyster cultivation, Alaska Sea Grant, University of Alaska Southeast, and OceansAlaska have partnered to develop hands-on training for those interested in oyster hatchery and nursery operations. This workshop will cover oyster biology, anatomy and life cycles; water quality and site selection; microalgae production; spawning and larval rearing; setting seed; and nursery systems such as bottle upwellers and floating upwellers (FLUPSYs).

The training will take place at OceansAlaska Hatchery (OAH) in Ketchikan, Alaska. OAH is a multi-use hatchery, producing both oyster and seaweed seed.

Space is limited to 12 participants and applications are required. Priority will be given to Alaska residents, members of rural and Indigenous communities, and active oyster farmers. The workshop fee is $50 and includes breakfast and lunch; travel and lodging for Alaskan residents will be supported with funding from the Alaska Mariculture Cluster workforce development project.

Apply online by March 14, 2025.
